Student login problems on testing day come from four things that all have to be true before a child can begin. The roster has to have reached the testing platform, the account has to exist, the secure browser has to be a version the platform still accepts, and the headset has to work in both ears. A cracked screen announces itself. None of those four do.
We can't point you to a study that sorts testing-day help desk tickets by category. We looked, and we couldn't find one. What we can describe is how these four fail, which turns out to be the more useful thing anyway. All four fail silently, so you find out at the exact moment a student clicks the button and nothing happens. None of the four costs money to fix.
The testing platform's copy of the roster is the one that decides whether a student can start, so pull it and compare it line by line against your SIS. Rostering runs on a sync, and a scheduled job can fail quietly or succeed while dropping the students whose records changed most recently.
Students who changed something are the ones most likely to fall out. A new enrollment or a grade correction entered on a Friday is exactly the kind of record a Monday sync mishandles, and those are also the students whose testing eligibility tends to be most time-sensitive.
Do the comparison twice. Once now, once even closer to the window if you're not in it.
Rolling enrollment is where account provisioning breaks, which makes your three most recent enrollments the three accounts worth logging into today. Use the real device model and the real room, not your own laptop at your own desk.
Placement and screening assessments run on their own clock. English learner identification, in particular, starts counting from each individual student's own enrollment date. Federal guidance under Title III makes the shape of that clock explicit: parents have to be notified of placement within 30 days of the start of the year, or within two weeks for a student who enrolls after that. Your own state sets the assessment deadline itself, and those deadlines differ.
A child who starts on Tuesday needs a working account on Wednesday, and there's no batch to wait for. If your provisioning is a start-of-year batch job with a manual process bolted on for stragglers, the manual process is your real system for the entire fall.
Testing programs publish hard minimums for operating systems and secure browsers, and they revise them every year. Check your versions against your state's current published list after every operating system update. An update that runs itself over a weekend can push a working device below the line, and nothing on the screen will say so.
California's testing program, as one published example of how specific these lists get, told schools that for 2025-26 they'd need Windows builds from May 2025 or later and ChromeOS 138 or higher, with ChromeOS 139 requiring an entirely different secure browser built as a progressive web app instead of the previous native one. macOS and iPadOS carried their own minimums on the same list. Support for older combinations expired on October 31, 2025. Your state publishes its own version of that list, and the version numbers in it have moved since last year.
Two practical things follow. Find the devices in your fleet that can't reach the minimum, because those are a replacement conversation with a lead time attached and they belong on the escalation list today. Then check whether your management platform is set to push operating system updates automatically during your testing window. The safe setting is usually "not that week."
Audio gets tested by hand, one headset at a time, and the whole job is ten minutes with a drawer. Louisiana's screener guidance, to name one published example, says the state's online EL portal needs a headset and a microphone, and several states run their English learner placement screener the same way. There's no remote check that tells you a left ear died in a closet.
The blast radius here is wider than it looks. Smarter Balanced, a multi-state assessment consortium, lists headphones as a device requirement for audio-based accommodations. Text-to-speech and read-aloud accommodations run through the same drawer of headsets nobody has opened since spring.
Listen to both ears, then test the microphone. Flex the cable where it meets the plug while audio is playing. Connectors are where headsets die. Label the dead ones and count what's left against the number of students with an audio accommodation, which is a number your assessment coordinator already has.
One practice item, run all the way through with the sound on, is the only check that proves an accommodation actually works. Take a student profile that carries an audio accommodation and run it on the hardware a student will really use.
A flag set correctly in the platform is only half the chain. The other half is the hardware sitting in the room, and the only way to see that half work is to run it once.
Do the same for any accommodation with a technical dependency, including text-to-speech language settings and magnification. These settings are the least likely to be exercised during a normal school week, which makes them the least likely to have been caught by ordinary use.
Run the roster comparison first. It's the check most likely to surface something that needs help from outside your team, which gives it the longest tail, and a tail is the one thing you can't shorten in October.
CoSN's 2026 report puts 78% of very small districts, meaning under 1,750 students, on one to three IT staff in total, and 34% of districts overall report understaffed technical support. At a charter campus or a small operator, the person who administers the SIS usually also owns single sign-on and the device management console. There's no identity team to hand a roster diff to.
Write the fallback down while you're in there. Thirty minutes is roughly how long a single sign-on outage runs before anyone upstream tells you anything, so decide now what the room does during those thirty minutes. Headsets can sit at the end of the list. It's the one job you can finish alone in an afternoon no matter what else is on fire.
Because none of them fail loudly. A roster sync that dropped forty students still finishes and still logs a success. A secure browser that's one version out of support still opens on the desk. The moment of truth is the moment a student clicks in, and by then the room is full.
There's plenty of evidence that identity is fragile at scale. On April 29, 2026, New York schools couldn't log into the platform used for grades 3-8 math testing; the state let schools pause and reschedule and extended the window into mid-May. Months earlier, on October 20, 2025, an AWS outage took Clever and ClassLink offline at the same time across multiple states, which is rostering and single sign-on going dark together on an ordinary Monday.
Neither of those was any school's fault and neither was fixable from a campus. The parts you can control are the ones on this list, and that's the whole argument for spending the afternoon.
